There are more than 11 million people in the UK with some form of hearing loss – that’s one in six; of these, over 45,000 are children. Although many would benefit from early intervention, research shows it takes on average ten years for people to address their hearing loss.
Finding out you have hearing loss can be a shock and the early signs may be subtle. If you or a loved one is affected by hearing loss, you may not know where to turn to for support. The HearPeers Mentor Programme is a community of hearing implant users and their family members, who are dedicated to supporting individuals going through similar experiences.
Once diagnosed with hearing loss, there are a number of hearing solutions available so choosing the most appropriate option can be difficult. Selection requires careful consultation with a healthcare professional, as well as personal preference. When it comes to considering a hearing implant, HearPeers Mentor Sarah; a GP and parent of two hearing impaired girls, says: “Do accept any offers of talking to other families with implanted children (or other adults with implants). Speaking with others was extremely helpful for me and my family.”
